Emmet, Robert

Emmet, Robert (1778-1803), an Irish patriot, became one of that country’s best-remembered heroes. He led an unsuccessful revolt against the English viceroy in 1803. Although Emmet escaped after the revolt, he was later captured, tried, and hanged on Sept. 20, 1803.

Emmet was born on March 4, 1778, in Dublin. As a young man, he became disturbed over the injustice of English rule. He joined the United Irishmen and later sought aid in France in an effort to free Ireland. He died on Sept. 20, 1803.
