Emory University

Emory University is a private institution of higher learning in Atlanta, Georgia. The Methodist Episcopal Church founded Emory College in 1836 in Oxford, Georgia. It was named for a young Methodist bishop, John Emory of Maryland, who had died in a carriage accident the previous year. The school moved to Atlanta in 1914 and was granted a charter as Emory University the following year. Emory has a medical complex, a museum of art and archaeology, and other research institutes. Near the campus is the Carter Center of Emory University, a research center that former President Jimmy Carter helped establish. Oxford College, a two-year division of the university, is in Oxford. Emory University athletic teams are called the Eagles.
