Essen (pop. 566,201), a city in western Germany, is in a major industrial region called the Ruhr. The city was the home of the Krupp steelworks company, which was a major weapons manufacturer during World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). In the 1990’s, Krupp merged with another industrial giant, Thyssen, to form ThyssenKrupp, which continues to be a major employer in Essen. Other economic activity includes coal and electric power production, transportation, and commerce. Essen’s landmarks include a cathedral that dates from the 800’s; and Borbeck Castle, built in the 1200’s.
Essen dates from the 800’s, when it was the site of a convent. It became industrialized in the 1800’s. Allied bombing raids during World War II destroyed much of Essen. But the city has been rebuilt.
