Evans, Godfrey (1920-1999), was one of the greatest wicketkeepers in the history of cricket. Evans played in 91 test matches and dismissed 218 batsmen in tests. He was the first wicketkeeper to make 2,000 runs and take 200 wickets in test matches. He played his first test in 1946, against India. He took his 100th test wicket in 1952.
Thomas Godfrey Evans was born in London on Aug. 18, 1920, and moved with his mother to Kent while he was a baby. He first played county cricket for Kent in 1939. Evans retired in 1959. He wrote an autobiography, The Gloves Are Off (1960). He died on May 3, 1999.
