Fabre, Jean Henri Casimir << FAH buhr, zhahn ahn REE ka zee MEER >> (1823-1915), a French naturalist, spent his life observing insects and spiders. He wrote simply of what he saw in the gardens and fields near his home. He received the ribbon of the Legion of Honor, but was fired from his teaching position because he allowed girls to attend his science classes. Fabre was almost unknown outside of France until he was nearly 80. Then the great scientific societies recognized his work. He wrote a 10-volume Souvenirs Entomologiques.
Fabre was born on Dec. 22, 1823, in St. Leon. He died on Oct. 11, 1915.
