Fauna << FAW nuh >> is the name given to the animal life of a certain period of time or of a certain part of the world. It corresponds to the word flora, which means the plant life of a certain place or time. Thus we may speak of the fauna and flora (animals and plants) of North America or of a past geological period. The term fauna comes from the name of a Roman goddess of fields and flocks.
