Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is an agency in the United States Department of Transportation. It controls air traffic; certifies aircraft, airports, and pilots and other personnel; and operates air navigation aids. The FAA announces and enforces air traffic procedures. Its research and development services deal with air traffic and air navigation and landing aids.
Founded in 1958, the FAA absorbed the Civil Aeronautics Administration, Airways Modernization Board, and safety rule-making functions of the Civil Aeronautics Board. An administrator appointed by the president directs the FAA.
