Feed is a term for food given to farm animals. Roughage feeds are coarse. They include pasture grasses and legumes (plants of the pea family), as well as the remains of crops such as corn and wheat. Some grasses and legumes are dried and fed to livestock as hay. Farmers often preserve whole corn plants and other crops to produce a feed called silage. Grains such as barley, corn, or grain sorghum are called concentrates when ground and mixed with other ingredients as feed.
Livestock also eat by-products of milling, brewing, food processing, and other industries. Crops used to produce oils yield by-product feeds known as oilseed meals. Farmers combine feeds to ensure a nutritious diet for livestock.
