Fiat, << FY uht, FY at, or FEE aht, >> in government, is an executive order or decree that requires obedience but is not a law. Many legal scholars consider a fiat to be an order that is issued for purposes other than to carry out legislation. Such orders sometimes come into conflict with one or more laws. In many cases, these conflicts are resolved by the courts. The term fiat comes from Latin. Its Latin meaning is let it be done.
