Flageolet << `flaj` uh LEHT >> is a small woodwind instrument that belongs to the flute family. It consists of an ivory, wooden, or metal tube with a mouthpiece at one end. The tube has four finger holes on top and two thumb holes underneath. A player holds the flageolet vertically and blows through the mouthpiece. The flageolet has a high sound similar to that of the piccolo, but somewhat softer. The flageolet gained its greatest popularity in the 1600’s.
