Flagler, Henry Morrison

Flagler, Henry Morrison (1830-1913), was an American businessman. He became a partner of the industrialist John D. Rockefeller and helped him organize the Standard Oil Company in 1870. Flagler remained a top executive at Standard Oil until 1911. But after the early 1880’s, his main business activity was in Florida. In 1886, he helped organize what became the Florida East Coast Railroad. He later extended the railroad so that by 1912, it stretched from Jacksonville to Key West. He also built luxurious resort hotels in St. Augustine, Palm Beach, Miami, and other cities.

Flagler was born on Jan. 2, 1830, in Hopewell, near Canandaigua, New York. He died on May 20, 1913.
