Flahiff, George Bernard

Flahiff, George Bernard (1905-1989), archbishop of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was appointed a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. He became the first Canadian in a province west of Ontario to be named a cardinal.

Flahiff was born in Paris, Ontario, on Oct. 26, 1905. He attended the University of Toronto and universities in Strasbourg and Paris, France. He became a priest in 1930. From 1954 to 1961, Flahiff was superior-general of the Basilian Fathers, a Canadian order (community of priests). He became archbishop of Winnipeg in 1961 and retired in 1982. He died on Aug. 22, 1989.
