Flamenco << fluh MEHNG koh >> is a type of dance and music originally associated with the Roma (sometimes called Gypsies) of southern Spain. Flamenco dance and music are now performed on the stage with guitars and castanets, but they are also performed at small gatherings of families and friends.
Performers of flamenco dance and music are expected to improvise and add passionate and spirited personal interpretations to create intense and energetic performances. Flamenco dancing, often in colorful costumes, may be performed by a single person, a couple, or a larger group. A performance includes skillful footwork, forceful but flowing arm movements, hand clapping, and finger snapping. Sometimes the dancers use castanets to complement the musicians’ steady yet ornamented rhythms.
