Flying fox is a large bat that eats mostly fruit. There are dozens of species (kinds) of flying foxes. The bats live mostly in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia. They are also found in regions of the South Pacific. Flying foxes are the largest bats in the world. The head and body are about 1 foot (30 centimeters) long, and the wingspread can be up to 6 feet (1.8 meters). The name flying fox comes from the bat’s face, which resembles that of a fox. In addition to fruit, flying foxes also feed on flower buds, nectar, and pollen. Flying foxes are mostly active at night. They typically spend the day hanging in trees, often in groups. Some kinds of flying foxes are in danger of dying out completely. They are threatened by habitat destruction and by hunting.
