Foreman, George

Foreman, George (1949-…), an American boxer, became the oldest fighter to win the heavyweight championship. On Nov. 5, 1994, Foreman knocked out champion Michael Moorer to win the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation versions of the heavyweight title. Foreman was 45 years and 10 months old when he won the fight, more than 7 years older than the previous oldest champion, Joe Walcott. Foreman previously held the heavyweight title from January 1973 to October 1974. He won it with an upset victory over champion Joe Frazier. Foreman lost the title when he was knocked out by Muhammad Ali. The defeat was the first since Foreman turned professional in 1969.

George Edward Foreman was born on Jan. 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas. He first became famous for winning the heavyweight championship at the 1968 Olympic Games. He retired from boxing in 1977 but resumed his fighting career in 1987. Foreman failed to regain the heavyweight title in 1991, losing a decision to champion Evander Holyfield. In 1997, Foreman again announced his retirement. He had a career record of 76 victories, 68 by knockouts, and 5 defeats. Beginning in the late 1980’s, he became a popular television personality.
