Fort originally was a fortified building or place that provided defense against attack. On the American frontier, many forts also served as trading posts. Many cities that grew up around forts bear their names, including Fort Wayne, Indiana. The term fort now applies to permanent United States Army posts. See also Blockhouse ; Castle .
