Fort Moore, Georgia, is the site of the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence. The Maneuver Center includes the Army Infantry School and the Army Armor School. Also at Fort Moore is the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The fort, formerly called Fort Benning, covers 182,000 acres (73,650 hectares). It lies 9 miles (14 kilometers) south of Columbus on the Chattahoochee River.
The Army established Camp Benning in 1918. It was named after Brigadier General Henry L. Benning, who served in the Confederate Army in the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 2023, the Army renamed the base to honor Lieutenant General Hal Moore and his wife, Julia Moore. Hal Moore was a veteran of the Korean War (1950-1953) and Vietnam War (1957-1975). He became known for his heroism in combat and for his concern for the soldiers under his command. Julia Moore won acclaim for her work on behalf of military families.
