Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, is the only United States military base to contain three branches of the United States armed services—the Air Force, the Army, and the Navy The joint base consists of three formerly independent bases close to New Jersey. They were combined to form Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in 2009.

McGuire Air Force Base houses the 87th Air Base Wing. The base was originally founded as part of the Army in 1937. It was transferred to the Air Force in 1949. The base is named after Thomas B. McGuire, Jr., a pilot in World War II (1939-1945).

Fort Dix is a U.S. Army Forces Command training, mobilization, and deployment center. It provides training support to active and reserve component units of all services. The fort, founded in 1917, was named after John A. Dix, a Union major general in the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst provides support for military aircraft. It was found in 1921. The station became famous as the site of the Hindenburg airship crash in 1937 (see Hindenburg ).
