Fort Gregg-Adams

Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia, is the home of the United States Army Combined Arms Support Command, the Army Quartermaster Center and School, the Army Logistics University, the Defense Commissary Agency, and the Army Transportation Corps and School. Fort Gregg-Adams lies 3 miles (5 kilometers) east of Petersburg and covers about 5,600 acres (2,300 hectares).

The post, formerly called Fort Lee, was founded in 1917. It was named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. After World War I (1914-1918), the fort served as a wildlife sanctuary until it reopened during World War II (1939-1945). It became a permanent fort in 1950. In 2023, the fort’s name was changed to honor Lieutenant General Arthur Gregg and Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams. Gregg was the first Black American to become a lieutenant general in the U.S. Army. Adams was the first Black officer to serve in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.
