Fort McClellan

Fort McClellan, << muh KLEHL uhn, >> was a United States Army training center in Alabama. It was established in 1917 and was named for Major General George B. McClellan, who served as commander of Union forces during the early years of the American Civil War (1861-1865). The fort covered about 47,000 acres (19,000 hectares) northeast of Anniston.

Fort McClellan was a training site for the United States Women’s Army Corps (WAC) from 1952 until 1977. It was later the home of the United States Army Chemical School, the Military Police School, and the Department of Defense Polygraph Institute. It also housed a basic combat training brigade. Fort McClellan closed in 1999.
