Fort Monmouth, << MON muhth, >> New Jersey, was the headquarters of the United States Army Communications-Electronics Command. It also housed the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School and electronics research and development laboratories. The fort stood about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of New York City. The post was established in 1917. It received the name of Fort Monmouth in 1925 to honor the soldiers who fought on the fields of Monmouth during the American Revolution (1775-1783). Fort Monmouth closed in 2011. The U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School moved to West Point, New York. Most of the communications and electronics activities at Fort Monmouth moved to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
