Fort Peck Dam, on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana, is one of the largest earth-fill dams in the world. It contains about 125,600,000 cubic yards (96,100,000 cubic meters) of earth. Fort Peck Dam was completed in 1940. It stretches for nearly 4 miles (6 kilometers) across the Missouri. The main section is 10,578 feet (3,224 meters) long, and a dike section on the west riverbank is 10,448 feet (3,185 meters) long. The dam is 250 feet (76 meters) high. Its reservoir, Fort Peck Lake, holds 15.4 million acre-feet (19 billion cubic meters) of water.
