Fort Sam Houston, Texas, houses the headquarters of United States Army North, also called the Fifth U.S. Army; U.S. Army South; and the U.S. Army Medical Command. The fort covers 3,160 acres (1,280 hectares) within the city limits of San Antonio and about 28,000 acres (11,300 hectares) at Camp Bullis, 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of the city. Also at the post is the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School. The post was established in 1876 as the Military Post of San Antonio. In 1890, its name was changed to honor Samuel Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas. In 2010, Fort Sam Houston—along with Lackland Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base—became part of Joint Base San Antonio.
