Fort Shafter, Hawaii, serves as the headquarters of United States Army, Pacific. It covers 589 acres (238 hectares) north of Honolulu’s main urban area. The post was set up as Kahauiki Military Reservation in 1899. In 1907, it was named for Major General William R. Shafter, who fought in the American Civil War (1861-1865) and the Spanish-American War (1898).
