Fort Sill, Oklahoma, is the site of the United States Army Field Artillery Center and School. The post covers 94,220 acres (38,000 hectares) near Lawton. The Army established the post in 1869 to keep watch over the Comanche and Kiowa tribes. The post was named after Brigadier General Joshua W. Sill, a Union commander killed at the Battle of Stones River during the Civil War (1861-1865). The grave of the Apache leader Geronimo is at Fort Sill.
