Foundry

Foundry is a plant where workers make molded metal products called castings. Products made in foundries range from engine blocks to toy soldiers. The process of pouring melted metals into molds is called founding. The metals commonly used include iron, steel, brass, bronze, aluminum, lead, zinc, and magnesium (see Cast and casting ). Dies can also be made in foundries (see Die and diemaking ).

Foundries that turn out heavy castings often do their founding in large pits in the floor. Overhead cranes ease the work of lifting and carrying the heavy molds and castings from place to place. Some foundries are highly automated. In such foundries, machines are used to make the molds, pour the metal, and clean the castings.
