Foyt, A. J. (1935-…), became one of the greatest drivers in auto racing history. Foyt won the national Indy car championship seven times. He also won 67 Indy car races, more than any other driver. Foyt is one of only three drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 four times. The others are Rick Mears and Al Unser, Sr. Foyt ranks as the most versatile driver in auto racing history. He is the only person to win the Indianapolis 500 race, for Indy cars; the Daytona 500 race, for stock cars; and the 24-hour races of Le Mans, France, and Daytona Beach, Fla., for sports cars. In 1993, Foyt retired as a driver but remained in racing as a car owner.
Anthony Joseph Foyt, Jr., was born on Jan. 16, 1935, in Houston. He won his first auto race at the age of 18 driving a midget car. Larry Foyt, his son, and A. J. Foyt IV, his grandson, are also auto racing drivers.
