French, Daniel Chester (1850-1931), was one of the most famous American sculptors of his time. His best-known works include the large statue of Abraham Lincoln (1922) in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and The Minute Man (1875), a Revolutionary War memorial in Concord, Massachusetts. Another important work is The Angel of Death and the Sculptor (1892), the Milmore Memorial in Forest Hill Cemetery in Boston. French also completed many portraits and public sculptures. He was born on April 20, 1850, in Exeter, New Hampshire, and studied in the United States and Italy. He died on Oct. 31, 1931. See also Lincoln Memorial .
