French West Indies consist of several small islands at the eastern end of the Caribbean Sea. They are part of the Lesser Antilles island chain. The French West Indies cover 1,085 square miles (2,808 square kilometers) and have a population of 833,000. They include Guadeloupe and Martinique, each of which is an overseas region and department of France, and St.-Barthélemy and St.-Martin, each of which is an overseas collectivity of France.
