Fritillary, << FRIHT uh `lehr` ee, >> is a group of plants with nodding, bell-shaped flowers. There are dozens of species (kinds). They grow in the Northern Hemisphere, throughout temperate regions, which have hot summers and cool or cold winters. Most fritillaries bloom in the spring. Many cultivated fritillaries are hardy plants and thrive in good garden soil. Popular kinds of fritillaries include the crown imperial and the guinea hen flower, also known as the checkered lily or snakes-head. The crown imperial has brick- or yellow-red flowers. The guinea hen flower has checkered or veined purple-colored flowers.
