Fry, Charles

Fry, Charles (1872-1956), also called C.B. Fry, was one of the United Kingdom ‘s best all-around athletes. He was a great cricketer , played soccer and rugby , and was a long jumper. He played cricket for Surrey , Sussex , and Hampshire . He appeared in 26 Test (tournament) matches, and was captain in 9 of them. His highest score was 258 for Hampshire in 1911. Fry played soccer for England . He was also a scholar, journalist, and politician.

Charles Burgess Fry was born on April 25, 1872, in Croydon, London . He studied at Oxford University from 1890 to 1893, where he was a track and field star. From 1908 to 1950, Fry was director of the training ship Mercury, training several generations of cadets for the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy . Fry’s autobiography, Life Worth Living, was published in 1939. He died on Sept. 7, 1956.
