Fulmar, << FUL muhr, >> is a kind of ocean bird. Fulmars are petrels. They resemble large gulls, with a bill that is nearly as long as the head. The feet are webbed, and the hind toe is reduced to a claw.
Fulmars breed on rocky shores and make shallow nests in high, rocky places. A fulmar lays one egg in the nest. Fulmars feed on any animal matter but prefer fatty substances, such as whale blubber. The bird is valuable for its feathers, down, and oil.
There are two species (kinds) of fulmars. The northern fulmar lives in far northern seas throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The southern fulmar lives in far southern seas throughout the Southern Hemisphere.
