Gargle is a liquid used to soothe sore throats and help prevent the spread of germs. The user puts the liquid in the mouth, throws the head back, and churns the liquid about in the throat. The liquid is not swallowed. Many formulas are used in making gargles. The simplest is 1 teaspoon (4.9 milliliters) of table salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 pint (0.5 liter) of water. Often the gargle does not reach far enough down into the throat to relieve the soreness.
