Garrote

Garrote, << guh ROHT or guh ROT, >> is an iron collar. It was once used in Spain and Portugal to execute condemned persons. Executioners seated the prisoner in a chair and placed the garrote around the neck. The garrote, attached to an iron post which stood behind the prisoner’s chair, was tightened by a screw until the prisoner strangled. Murderers have often used a form of garrote made of loops of wire, or even scarves to strangle their victims.
