Gauss, << gows, >> is a unit used to measure the strength of a magnetic field. It is named for Carl Friedrich Gauss, a German mathematician, who did important work in electromagnetism. The earth’s magnetic field is relatively weak. It is only about 1/2 gauss. The magnetic field of a cyclotron may reach 20,000 gauss.
