Genius was a guardian spirit worshiped by the ancient Romans. The Romans believed that every man was born with a genius (plural, genii) who protected and guided him throughout his life. A woman’s protector was called her Juno.
The man gave gifts to his genius on his birthday. After he died, his family honored his genius at his burial site. The emperor’s genius was especially sacred and was included in public prayers.
