Geographic center of the United States

Geographic center of the United States is in South Dakota, about 17 miles (27 kilometers) west of Castle Rock in Butte County. Before Alaska became a state in 1959, the geographic center was in Smith County, Kansas. With the admission of Alaska, it moved to Butte County. When Hawaii became a state later in 1959, it shifted 6 miles (10 kilometers) west-southwest.
