Geographic Names, United States Board on, a United States government organization, decides official names of geographic features and places for federal maps and other publications. The board works with officials from U.S. states, the United Nations, and other countries to develop federal standards for both domestic and foreign geographic names. The board works cooperatively with the secretary of the interior and consists of representatives from other executive departments and federal agencies. It was established in 1890.
