Getty Museum, J. Paul, houses a distinguished collection of Western European art. The museum, which opened in 1997, is in the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Its collection includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, decorative arts, illuminated (illustrated) manuscripts, and photographs.
The Getty Villa in Malibu is a center for the study of comparative archaeology and cultures. The villa, which opened in 1974, is a re-creation of an ancient Roman country house with gardens. The villa was closed to the public for remodeling in 1997. It reopened in January 2006. The remodeled villa exhibits art from ancient Greece and Rome. The museum and villa are operated by the J. Paul Getty Trust, a foundation devoted to the visual arts.
