Ghirlandajo, Domenico

Ghirlandajo, Domenico, << geer lahn DAH yoh, doh MAY nee koh >> (1449-1494), also spelled Ghirlandaio, was the most successful Italian painter of his time in Florence. He painted frescoes and altarpieces in a direct, sober, and detailed manner. His style differed greatly from the more lyrical and complex style of Filippino Lippi and Sandro Botticelli, two major Florentine artists of his time. Michelangelo was one of his apprentices. Ghirlandajo was born Domenico di Tommaso Bigordi in Florence.
