Glass, Carter (1858-1946), was a leading American statesman. A Virginia Democrat, Glass served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1902 until 1918, and in the U.S. Senate from 1920 until his death. He was president pro tempore of the Senate from 1941 to 1945. He served as secretary of the treasury under President Woodrow Wilson between 1918 and 1920. An advocate of banking reforms, Glass sponsored the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. The act set up the Federal Reserve System. He co-sponsored the Glass-Steagall Banking Act of 1933. This act created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (see Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation ). Glass was born on June 4, 1858, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He died on May 28, 1946.
