Glen Canyon Dam, in northern Arizona near the Utah border, helps control the flow of the Colorado River. One of the world’s highest dams, it is 710 feet (216 meters) high. The dam traps water in Glen Canyon and forms Lake Powell, one of the world’s largest artificially created lakes. The lake holds about 20.3 million acre-feet (25 billion cubic meters) of water. Glen Canyon Dam was completed in 1964. It is one of the major dams of the Upper Colorado River Basin. It supplies water and electric power to a large section of the Rocky Mountain States.
