Glick, George Washington

Glick, George Washington (1827-1911), was the first Democrat to be elected governor of Kansas. Glick was born on July 4, 1827, in Ohio. He studied law in the office of Rutherford B. Hayes and practiced in Ohio from 1850 to 1858, when he moved to Atchison, Kansas.

Glick was an attorney for the Union Pacific Railroad, and served eight terms in the Kansas state legislature. He was governor from 1883 to 1885. Later, he served on the state board of agriculture. A statue of Glick represented Kansas in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., from 1914 to 2003. Kansas then replaced the statue of Glick with one of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
