Glover, John

Glover, John (1767-1849), was a painter of Australian landscapes. Glover was born on Feb. 18, 1767, in Leicestershire, England. He helped to found the Society of British Artists in 1824 and was a member of the Society of Painters in Oils and Water-colours. He served as president of the society in 1807 and again in 1814 and 1815. In 1829, Glover immigrated to Tasmania, settling on a land grant near Launceston. Glover began raising sheep and painting the local scenes that made him a pioneer of Australian landscape painting. Glover died on Dec. 9, 1849.
