Gnatcatcher, << NAT `kach` uhr, >> is a group of small songbirds native to the Western Hemisphere. One well-known species (kind) is the blue-gray gnatcatcher, which ranges from the north-central United States to Guatemala. It is 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 centimeters) long, with a bluish-gray back and white breast. This bird covers its nest with lichens and uses spider webs to bind it to the limb of a tree. The female lays four or five pale blue eggs. The name gnatcatcher comes from the bird’s habit of darting after flying insects.
