Goddard, Mary Katherine

Goddard, << GOD uhrd, >> Mary Katherine (1738-1816), helped publish and print three newspapers in the American Colonies—The Providence Gazette, The Pennsylvania Chronicle, and The Maryland Journal. All three were established and then abandoned by her brother William.

From 1774 to 1784, Goddard was publisher of the Journal, a widely read revolutionary paper. On Jan. 18, 1777, she became the first person to publish the Declaration of Independence with the names of all its signers. In March 1782, the Journal reprinted Thomas Paine’s revolutionary pamphlet Common Sense. Goddard ran various businesses together with the Journal, including a bookstore and a paper mill. She also was postmistress of Baltimore from 1775 to 1789. Goddard was born on June 16, 1738, in New London, Connecticut. She died on Aug. 12, 1816.
