Godetia, << goh DEE shuh, >> is the name of a group of popular garden flowers. About 40 kinds grow wild in western North America. Godetias are also called farewell-to-spring. A popular type is the satin flower. Most satin flowers grow from 12 to 30 inches (30 to 76 centimeters) tall and have leaves 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) long. The flowers are about 2 inches (5 centimeters) wide. They have four broad, satiny petals that may be white, pink, lavender, or red. Godetias are annuals—that is, they grow and die in one year. The plant was named for Swiss botanist Charles H. Godet.
