Godey, Louis Antoine, << GOH dee, LOO ee AN twahn >> (1804-1878), in 1830 founded Godey’s Lady’s Book, the first women’s magazine in the United States. It was edited by Sarah Josepha Hale. Noted writers of the day wrote for it, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Godey was born in New York City on June 6, 1804. He had little formal education. He started work at the age of 15 as a clerk on a Philadelphia newspaper. Godey died in Philadelphia on Nov. 29, 1878.
