Goliath, << guh LY uhth, >> in the Old Testament, was a Philistine warrior almost 10 feet (300 centimeters) tall. He defied the Israelite army to send a champion to fight him. Young David, armed with only a sling and five stones, volunteered. David, confident that he upheld God’s honor, shot his first stone into Goliath’s forehead, killing the giant. The story is told in I Samuel 17. In II Samuel 21:19, Goliath is said to have been killed by Elhanan, one of David’s soldiers.
