Gong is a metal percussion instrument shaped like a circular plate. It hangs on a stand and is played by striking it with a mallet. There are two types of gongs. One type, called a tuned gong, has a fixed pitch. The other, called an untuned gong or tam-tam, has no fixed pitch.
A gong produces a deep, rich sound that varies with the type of mallet used. Most mallets are made of rubber or wood and covered with felt or wool. Gongs vary in size, and no two sound alike. Gongs originated in the Far East and were introduced into Europe during the late Middle Ages. Gongs are used in bands, orchestras, and small musical groups. In many cultures, they are also used for religious purposes.
